Winter is the right time to put your home heating equipment into full operation, especially at night when temperatures drop to below the freezing point. There is nothing more frustrating than to find the equipment is not working after several months of not using it. Here are the common problems to check out for and how to restore the equipment to its normal functioning.

1. Clogged Air Filters

Clogging of air filters is a common problem with home heating equipment, especially when they have not been cleaned or replaced after being in service for some time. This problem will cause the furnace to keep cycling on and off, a very annoying occurrence. This cycling leads to low efficiency of the equipment and high energy bills. Blocked filters can also lead to cold and hot spots. They also make the system overheat and, in this case, lets out cold instead of warm air.

You need to hire a heating technician to either clean or replace the air filter if it is torn or cracked.

2. Faulty Thermostat

There are two scenarios that happen when you have a thermostat that is faulty. First, your thermostat is not powering on or is failing to respond. And in this case, your home's indoor temperature doesn't change at all, even after you have adjusted it. You may also have an unlit display, or the thermostat fails to respond at all. And all these mean that your thermostat has already malfunctioned, or you just probably need to replace batteries.

The other scenario is when your heating equipment won't turn on at all. And this means that your thermostat has some wiring defects that curb electrical signals from being sent to the heating unit.

Just call in a heating technician to fix your defective thermostat.

3.  Fan or Blower Continuously Running

If you have not set your fan or blower to run continuously and it is doing so, then you might have a problem with the thermostat. Otherwise, the problem could be the fan limit switch, which determines when the blower turns on and off. If it's faulty, then it is not determining correctly when hot air should be drawn into the ventilation system. To restore your equipment to normal heating, clean or replace the blower.

Further, fans can get damaged mechanically and become detached, requiring repairs or replacing to restore the equipment to normal functioning.

Home heating equipment needs to be maintained and repaired regularly by HVAC professionals to restore normal functioning and efficiency. This helps save on heating costs.
